2013 Finish |
Let me start this off by saying...I had no idea how I would do on this race...I really went in to the race thinking by mile 5, I was going to hit the wall.....If you read the last edition of my blog, You may of noticed I had done a lot of celebrating of my 45th B-day the week before.
So here is the race report...
Saturday night : Dinner with a friend and then relaxing at the house...Some housework and such. I tried to get most things prepared in advance.
Finally fell asleep around 0130 am..was up with the alarm at 0530 but decided all I had to do was make a cup of coffee and get dressed and eat then I would go back to sleep till 6 am..
0600 First text from Kathleen comes thru to tell me she is on her way to pick me up...Damn it..I guess I really have to get out of bed,,,,
0615 Dressed and coffee brewing...trying to figure out if I am over dressed or not for the race. Long pants over the capri pants, short sleeve shirt and jacket, It is "cool" and raining...but I go out side and decided will be losing the long pants by race time.....it is almost 60 degrees already and lightly misting.
0620 Kathleen is here and I am looking for my running shoes in my car...LOL yes that is where I left them last,,,,I just could not remember that after the vast amount of celebrating that went on from Wednesday till Saturday night....ate a protein bar on the way and drank my coffee.
0635 We found a parking spot right behind the Biltmore Hotel..Literally one block from start line..We head into the Westin hotel to use the facilities... and stay warm for a few minutes.
0700 Back to the car and staying warm inside the car, while we discuss what we should wear..is it going to continue to rain? Will it get muggy? I decided on the capris, short sleeve and jacket.
0740 On our way to the start line with a stop at the port-a-johns of course..Kathleen then decided We have to be in the front near the start line. So we work our way to the front of the line...
0800 no race start..getting a little chilly..
0815 National Anthem..I started to look around and notice all the armed policed officers and swat teams..there are even officers on the roof tops...Kinda put a fear deep with in you. It is so sad that we can not even enjoy one thing that many of us use to help keep us healthy and sane! I try to put the evil and scared thought out of my mind and tell myself I am running this race for the ones who were injured and died at the Boston Marathon Bombing. I thank you GOD everyday for the ability to train and run.
(I think) 0820: Race gun goes off....And as always I am off like a fox running out of the Hen house. I get to mile one and I can finally start to breath, running cadence is still off, but moving forward. Thinking I should of left my jacket at the car. It is suddenly very muggy and warm....somewhere between mile one and mile two, I throw my jacket to a friend from TNT and say I'll get it on the way back...Totally soaked in sweat it felt great to lose the coat that had been tied around my waist since the 1/2 mile mark....
Running up Gano St another TRI NE member "slows" down as he is passing me on the Hill to say hi..and ask how I was doing..I reply I am good but not sure if I will make the whole 13.1 miles running...I knew I was dehydrated from a week long "Party" and not enough water hydration. He looked at me and laughed and went on his way.
Mile 3-5 felt really good...Mile 4 I lose my short sleeved shirt and Mile 6-8 even better...potty break around mile 8..
Mile 9 was a little tough but still ok.
Mile 10 KICKED MY ASS!!!!!! for some reason I just felt like my legs were as heavy as a ton of bricks...
Between miles 10 and 11 there is a lot of incline..then finally get to take the left to go back down Gano and I am so happy to see that down hill....but my legs are still very heavy and my breathing is slightly off...
Mile 12 I am thinking I am going to PR for this race...Maybe not my over all time for the 13.1 mile distance but for the Cox 1/2 for sure...Maybe I'll be even close to my PR for the 1/2 Marathon Distance...
Mile 13 There is Kathleen and Norine..calling me and all of a sudden running next to me and encouraging me to pick it up and move it.....for you see I had to walk a few times between the 10 and 13 mile markers. Not for long times just a few seconds at a time but 4 or 5 times I stopped to catch my breath or rub out my right glut muscle..really feeling a lot of cramping in my legs,,,,I know it is dehydration, love sodium levels from all the sweating..
I make that last left turn to see the finally shoot to the finish line...By my watch I may be setting a PR... I hear my name being called from the sidelines....Friends from We Run This Town,,,,,Sue, Rob, Maryann and others were yelling and cheering for me...I cross the finish line with a smile and a prayer to THANK GOD I was able to complete another race!
I look at my watch and see that is say 2:12:40 with a moving time of 2:11:22 finally with an elapse time of 2:15:29 and 13.32 miles..But I know I have auto stop on the watch and was not sure how much time I lost to stopping to use the Port A Potty...I was thinking 2-3 minutes...
